Monday of the second week. We had a nice, quite weekend which provided a brief respite from the construction project and which allowed us to get better adjusted to our temporary kitchen. It was nice not to have to try to work with someone tearing down a wall in the next room! As you can see from the photos, the tear out is progressing nicely. I can now begin to get a sense of what the space will be like after the kitchen is done. Interestingly, my first reaction was that the larger kitchen makes the dining room feel smaller! The dining room is nearly as large as the living room and it has always felt very large. For many years we didn't have a rug in the room, however, when we put a rug under the table it unified the room and made it feel much smaller. Now that the kitchen is opening up the dining room may become another notch smaller by comparison. It is very interesting how one's perception of size can change depending on such a simple addition to a room as a carpet or by changing the size of an adjacent room.
On Friday night I grilled extra thick pork chops in a fashion and with a rub described in Cooks magazine -- the results were fantastic. I also managed to steam asparagus and micro wave rice (Linda discovered an excellent microwavable frozen brown rice at Trader Joe's). The meal left me thinking that we might be able to survive in our new cooking environment. However, the dishwasher is still available and we are relying pretty heavily on it. The real test will come when we have to begin washing dishes in the bathroom. Stay tuned!
